Italian golfer Lorenzo Sartori has defeated the continent’s leading amateurs at Estonian Golf and Country Club to win the European Golf Association’s (EGA) International European Seniors' Championships 2013.
Taking place over three days on the highly acclaimed Sea Course – ranked in Golf World magazine’s Top 100 Golf Courses in Europe – Sartori’s final score of 217 gave the Italian victory by two-shots from Switzerland’s Markus Frank whose late burst of birdies saw him rise 17 places to finish second.
The 2012 champion, Irishman Maurice Kelly, maintained his good form in the tournament, finishing tied in sixth place, just four shots back from the winner.
The event was played concurrently with the International European Senior Ladies’ Championship, which was won by Sweden’s Helene Maxe.
The Swede had built a five shot lead after the second round, and was able to hold off nearest competitor, Finn Anna-Maria Lehtonen, scoring a tournament total of 221 to take the 2013 crown.
The International European Seniors’ Championship is open to European males over-55 years of age, with a handicap of 6.0 or better and females over-50 with a handicap of 9.0 or better.
Estonian Golf & Country Club, which is part of the European Tour Courses network, welcomed 137 competitors from more than 20 countries for the two events and will, next year, host the EGA’s European Ladies Amateur Championship 2014.
